Once a player has met the minimum point requirement, they are «Down» and then he and his partner are free to make further melds of any point value when it is his turn to play. The player can not start melding until his hand can meet the Minimum Point requirement.
The combined point values for all cards layed down on the initial meld must equal or exceed the Minimum point requirement for the round. When the meld has 7 cards a «book» or «Canasta» is made. On the initial meld Wild cards can only be used with pairs starting a new book. Melds are accomplished by laying down 3 or more cards of the same denomination on the table which starts a «Clean» book or laying down a pair of the same denomination with 1 wild card which starts a «Dirty» book. Threes are not meldable cards and are used strictly as discards. This continues until a player goes out or the Draw Pile runs out of playable cards.Įach player has Minimum Point requirements for the initial Meld which depends on the round that the players are playing.Įach card in the deck has a point value as follows:Ĩ, 9, 10, Jack, Queen and King each = 10 points At this point the player discards 1 card to the discard pile and his opponent starts his turn. Each hand begins with 13 cards.Įach player starts play with his Hand until it is exhausted then picks up his Foot and resumes playing until it is exhausted or the deck runs out of playable cards.
One is called the Hand which is played first and the other the Foot, which is played when the Hand is used up.

The game is played with standard decks, being the number of decks used equal to the number of players plus one. Play all or as many of the cards in your Hand and Foot before your opponent does and achieve the highest possible score.
